Overview of the scenario
(ie. a brief overview of the way the scenario plays out)

The students are initially at the front of the classroom gathered around one student who is rolling a large pair of dice. After each roll of the dice the students write down the total of the two dice on a piece of paper and the teacher tells the students how many rolls of the dice there have been ('37', '38', '39'). After three rolls of the dice the teacher tells the students that there is one roll to go. After the 40th roll, the teacher asks the students to go back to their desks and pack up their things. Once they are sitting quietly at their desks, the teacher recaps the lesson and tells the class what will happen during the next lesson. The teacher then tells the students that they may now go to lunch and the students start leaving the room.

Type of lesson and part of the lesson being role-played

Stage 3 Mathematics - Probability - Conclusion to the lesson

In the lesson students take it in turns to roll a set of dice and each record the total of the two dice after each roll and continue until there have been 40 rolls of the dice. In a later lesson students will use the data collected to calculate percentages, produce graphs and to make inferences about whether some values and/or combinations are more likely to be rolled than others. The main body of the lesson won't be acted out – only the conclusion to the lesson will be included in this scenario - the introduction to the lesson will be acted out as part of another scenario.

Teaching Strategies Demonstrated

Number of avatar controllers and avatars and main role of each
(Include information about whether some roles can or would ideally be performed by somebody carrying out multiple roles on multiple computers. Possibly a table showing avatar controllers and the avatars they will control. Mention number of cameras and control requirements, ie. number of people needed for this).

Avatar

Role

1

Teacher

Observes the students carrying out the dice rolling activity, counts the number of rolls, tells the students when to stop and return to their desks, recaps the lesson and briefly explains what will happen at the next lesson.

2

Jenny

Rolls the dice.

3.

Emma

Watches each dice roll and calls out the numbers shown and the total value for the benefit of other students as well as recording the value on paper. When asked by the teacher to go back to their desks, talks to Dan about the activity. When back at the desk continues to talk to Dan until asked to be quiet and listen by the teacher.

4.

Dan

Watches each dice roll and records the value on paper. When asked by the teacher to go back to their desks, talks to Emma about the activity. When back at the desk continues to talk to Emma until asked to be quiet and listen by the teacher.

5

Jake

Joe

Mark

Chris

Julie

Gina

Christine

Watches each dice roll and records the value on paper. When asked by the teacher to go back to their desk does so and then sits quietly.

6.

Camera operator

Equipment needed
(Number of computers, headsets etc)

11 computers (one teacher and 10 students) are needed. It will be necessary for some computers to be close to each other to allow one person to control more than one student avatar.

Three headset will be needed, one for teacher and one for each of the two students who talk (Emma and Dan).

Environment and layout
(Include any special environment tools or features)

Use of one of the role-play classrooms (the same classroom and avatars will be used for this scenario and the corresponding lesson introduction scenario).

Initial positioning

The students at the front of the classroom gathered around one student who is rolling a pair of dice. The teacher is standing to the side where they can see all students.

Sequence of events
(Aim for between 5 and 10 events)

Timing

Event (not word for word)

Camera positioning (indicative only)

0 to 15 sec

The students are standing at the front of the classroom around Jenny who is next to two large dice. The teacher is standing to the side watching. Jenny clicks on one of the dice to roll them.

1.   Back of room with all students and the teacher in view.

2.   From side of the group with close up on Jenny next to the dice.

15 sec to 30 sec

Emma calls out the number on each die and then the total number. The teacher tells the students that there have been 37 rolls of the dice.

1.     Back of room with all students and the teacher in view.

2.   From side of the group with view showing Jenny, Emma and the teacher.

30 sec to 1 min

Jenny rolls the dice again, Emma calls out the values again, and the teacher tells the students that there have been 38 rolls.

1.     Back of room with all students and the teacher in view.

2.   From side of the group with view showing Jenny, Emma and the teacher.

1 min to 1 min 30 sec

Jenny rolls the dice again, Emma calls out the values again, and the teacher tells the students that there have been 39 rolls and there is one to go.

1.     Back of room with all students and the teacher in view.

2.     From side of the group with view showing Jenny, Emma and the teacher.

1 min 30 sec to 2 min

Jenny rolls the dice again, Emma calls out the values again, and the teacher tells the students that there have now been 40 rolls and they should now go back to their desks.

1.     Back of room with all students and the teacher in view.

2.   From side of the group with view showing Jenny, Emma and the teacher.

2 min to 3 min

The students return to their desks. Emma and Dan talk to each other as they go, about the activity (eg. "I told you there wouldn't be any double sixes") and continue talking once they get back to their desks.

1.     Back of room with all students and the teacher in view.

2.   From side of the group showing Emma and  Dan walking to their desk.

3 min to 3 min 30 sec

The teacher asks the class for their attention but Emma and Dan continue to talk.

1.   From side of room showing the whole class including the teacher

2.   Close up on the teacher addressing the class.

3 min 30 sec to 4 min

The teacher uses Emma and Dan's names in order to get them to be quiet.

1.     From side of room showing the whole class including the teacher

2.   Close up on the teacher addressing the class.

4 min to 5 min

The teacher recaps what they have done during the lesson and explains that in the next lesson they will calculate the frequency and percentage of value, and draw a bar column graph of the values. The teacher then tells the class that they may now go to lunch and some students get up from their desks and start walking towards the door.
